Jelly Roll on his takeover of country music And Said “I discovered my voice”

Date:

This month’s CMT Music Awards had the most unexpected nominee who ended up being the night’s major story.

Beating legends like Morgan Wallen, Kane Brown, and Luke Combs, 38-year-old face-tattooed former addict and drug dealer Jelly Roll started selling his hip-hop mixtapes out of his car and went on to win the most trophies in a room full of country music aristocracy. With a full gospel choir supporting his gravelly voice and a studded leather jacket, he performed his new single, “Need a Favor,” to an enthusiastic audience.

Excitedly describing his backstage encounters with Shania Twain and Slash, Jelly Roll said in an interview, “It was a dream come true, in every way, and I’ve had the worst possible life up to this point.” “I felt like the awkward fat kid in every situation throughout my entire childhood, and I didn’t belong.” That resembled my prom from high school and the graduation I never attended, broadcast nationally on television.

Though it’s not his first release, Jelly Roll’s debut country album, “Whitsitt Chapel,” comes out on June 2. He has published over 20 albums, EPs, and mixtapes since 2011. Several of these are self-released joint projects with fellow Southern white rappers including Haystak and Lil’ Wyte. His music, which he refers to as “real music for real people with real problems,” has frequently discussed his criminal history and his sobriety path.

Before changing its way,  Jelly Roll was a “Horrible Human For the Decades.”

Growing up, Jelly Roll (born Jason DeFord) lived in Antioch, a working-class neighborhood south of Nashville’s downtown with a mixed population. His mother battled addiction and mental illness, and his father worked as a meat salesman in addition to being a bookie.

He was charged with aggravated robbery and possession with intent to sell when he was first arrested at the age of 14. He spent the following ten years in and out of juvenile facilities and jail.

Jelly Roll began composing his rhymes, drawing inspiration from Southern rappers such as Three 6 Mafia, UGK, and 8ball & MJG. He became determined to pursue music after discovering that he had a fifteen-year-old daughter. After he started touring nonstop, he amassed hundreds of millions of streams while receiving essentially no public attention.

Jelly Roll invited Johnny Depp to perform.

In November, Jelly Roll won New Artist of the Year at the CMA Awards. “Son of a Sinner” also brought him three 2023 CMT Awards, including Male Video of the Year, Male Breakout Video of the Year, and Digital-first Act of the Year.

Jelly Roll has a lot of thankfulness and optimism to concentrate on with the Grammy Awards approaching. “I’m going to be excessively cool to be a fan of a thing,” he stated on “Popcast (Deluxe).” “I think it’s essential to still get passionate about stuff.”

For “Whitsitt Chapel,” he composed around 80 songs before deciding on the primarily spiritual themes of the record. “He said, “I’m always asking why things are happening and what the objective is. Things looked to be doing well, but he had no sense of direction.”. We also don’t release anything if it’s only easy to monetize or catchy.

He then knew where he wanted the project to go after writing “Dancing With the Devil” and “Hungover in a Church Pew,” which ended up being the record’s last tracks, in a single night.
