‘All of Us Strangers’ Review: Love, desire, and ghosts

“All Of Us Strangers” Reviews & Cast

All of Us Strangers is a quasi-memory movie that has the uncanny feeling of a waking dream. It can be thought of as a follow-up to Andrew Haigh’s phenomenal 2011 debut film, Weekend. However, it also seems like something the director has been striving for his entire career.

Translating Japanese author Taichi Yamada’s 1987 novel Strangers, which Haigh adapted, moves the story away from category into more dramatic, psychological, and deeply emotional territory by making the main character a queer author in his 40s and downplaying spirit elements of his deceased parents.

After showings at the Telluride and New York film festivals, the Searchlight release will open on December 22. It is uniquely tailored to Haigh’s life yet sufficiently realistic to resonate with anybody who has known the joys and tragedies of both romantic and familial love.

Although being influenced by his struggling parents who died in an automobile accident when returning home from a party for Christmas when he was twelve, Adam is finding it difficult to move forward with a script that is set in the late eighties.

He flips through family photos, listens to vintage recordings like Fine Young Cannibals and Frankie Goes to Hollywood, and watches Brit-pop music videos, but the words don’t come. He lives alone in a big apartment tower where he spends most of his time staring blankly out of the window at the London cityscape across the Thames.

Knowing that Haigh is staging the moment to imply a gay cruising ground pickup, it comes as a startling shock when the stranger turns up to be Jamie Bell’s character, Adam’s father. Adam’s mother is overjoyed to see him when he gets home, and his father greets him as though it is a joyful surprise rather than a magical trick of time.

“Our boy is back at home,” his father replies, grinning. “You’ve always been a sensitive boy, you,” his mother says as Adam shows signs of being overwhelmed by the reunion. Before departing, he promises to come back.

What is the Story All About

The AIDS epidemic, and deciding whether or not to revert to the more liberal sex norms in the aftermath of the crisis will particularly resonate with a generation of homosexual men. Its remarks on losing parents when a child is young, before puberty and the early years of life, are sharp, honest, and incredibly moving. However, there’s a good chance that some members of the LGBTQ community who came out to their parents and then lost them will recognize themselves in the things that were said but not spoken.

All of Us Strangers” serves as a prism that reflects loneliness and its expressions onto a wall in the same way that colorful light does. Adam is a man unattached to most others; he is alone in every way physically, emotionally, mentally, and artistically.

The interactions and experiences that could have occurred but did not, such as the trip he and his parents chose not to take, the Christmas trees they neglected to decorate, the discussions they avoided having about his sexual orientation, and the consolation his father failed to provide when he was a young child sobbing by himself in his room, maybe the sources of his greatest sense of loneliness.

Andrew Scott plays Adam in a heartbreaking role tinged with sad longing that should put this outstanding actor who is still best known outside of British theater circles as the “Hot Priest” on season 2 of Fleabag on a wider global stage.
